VERTICUTTING

Verticutting is the process of cutting furrows (lines) in your lawn. This process in only recommended for yards that have more weeds and thatch, then they do grass. Such was the yard that is pictured. Six weeks after the lawn was verticutted and overseeded with our tri-blend fescue, it won "Yard of the month." No yard is hopeless.

OVERSEEDING

The best grass seed for our humid Kansas City weather is a tall turf fescue grass seed. You can seed anytime of the year, but the best time is in the fall, because the soil and atmospheric temperatures are at the best for optimum seed germination.

Benefits to overseeding with a tall turf fescue:

• Fine, soft textured turf

SPRING & FALL CLEAN UPS

A lawn clean up consists of removing twigs, leaves, and fruit from the lawn, cleaning up landscape beds, trimming bushes, trimming back perennial flowers, mowing the grass, and hauling the debris from the property.

POWER RAKING

Power raking is the process of mechanically combing out the extra thatch that is in your lawn. Some thatch is good for a lawn because it helps hold moisture, but lawns with an extraordinary amount of thatch in it; this is recommended.

FERTILIZATION

  Early spring: This application will "Wake up" you lawn out of winter dormancy by allowing the lawn to green and thicken up quicker.
• Step 2. On Guard.
  Late spring: This balanced fertilizer application helps maintain the color and thickness of your lawn and helps promote root growth. We also apply a round of pre-emergent weed control at the maximum rate to help you lawn to be "On Guard" against crabgrass and foxtail, now and throughout the rest of the season.
• Step 3. Stomp out.
  Early summer: This two step application prepares your lawn for the intense summer heat and provides season long protection to "Stomp Out" beetle grubs that are notorious for destroying lawns and encouraging mole activity.
• Step 4: Endure it.
  Late summer: This application will help strengthen your lawn to "Endure" the extreme summer heat. This application is only recommend for lawns that are irrigated.
• Step 5. Start up.

• Step 6. Bounce back.
  Early fall: This fertilizer application helps your lawn "Bounce Back" from any stress that if might have endured during the long, hot, and humid summer months.
• Step 7. Back to Bed.
  Late fall: This application feeds your lawns root system and causes your lawn to go "Back to Bed" so it is prepared for our unpredictable winters.

Each step includes spraying a quality herbicide to control broadleaf weeds such as dandelions, clover, and henbit.

DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

• French drain:
  If your yard seems to stay mushy longer then you wish; a french drain might be needed to help direct the excess water away from your house or the low lying areas. A French drain is an underground drainage system that consists of a 6" corrugated perforated pipe which is laid on a bed of gravel, then is covered by dirt. This drainage system allows the excess water to move away those low lying areas and to slowly drain throughout the system.


• Pop up emitters:
  A Pop up emitter allows water captured by drains, catch basins, and downspouts to flow through the drainage pipe and away from your foundation or to a less used area of the lawn. The emitter lays level to the ground so you cannot trip on it or hit it with a mower, but when it rains the hydrostatic pressure of water flowing through the drain pipe opens the emitter allowing the excess water to escape. If you are having water issues in your basement, this might be the fix for you.

MULCH

There are many types and colors of natural wood mulch that is available. Some of the more popular mulches are the cedar mulch, Sedona Red mulch, Java brown mulch, and dakota black mulch. A few advantages of natural wood much include that mulch will conserve moisture, discourage weeds, and of course, improves appearance.

DECORATIVE ROCK

GUTTER CLEANING

A lot of damage is caused to homes due to plugged gutters and downspouts. If your gutters are not flowing smoothly, rain will flow past the gutters falling right at your foundation causing unnecessary pressure against your foundation which could cause leaks in the basement. In the winter, plugged gutters create ice dams which will cause ice to build up in the gutters and then the thawing ice and snow will melt and seep through the roofing system which could cause moisture in the attic and in walls and eventually it will leak into the structure.
